About Shard Labs

Built the way we needed it to work.

Shard Labs is a small Australian company making tools for people who have to prove what they did — built to be workable by neurodivergent people, and affordable enough that a sole operator can start.

Why the record matters

Anything you are accountable for eventually has to be shown to someone — an auditor, a board, a regulator, a client, the tax office. The question is never whether you did the work. It is whether you can still demonstrate it.

So both products are built around the same four things. Accountability: every item has an owner and a date, not a vague sense that someone is across it. A log: what changed, when, and who changed it, kept as a matter of course rather than reconstructed under pressure. Ethics: your data stays where you put it, the AI cites what it drew on, and the software tells you when it does not know. Access: the tool has to be usable by the person who actually has to use it.

We are deliberately small, and we would rather tell you what a tool cannot do than have you discover it later.

Made by neurodivergent people, for however your head works.

Shard is built by an autistic, ADHD founder. That is not a marketing line — it is the reason the software is shaped the way it is. Compliance and bookkeeping tools are usually built around sustained attention, tolerance for ambiguity and a good working memory. Plenty of capable people do not have a reliable supply of any of those, and are then treated as though the problem is them.

  • One next thing. Screens lead with what is actually due, rather than a wall of everything at once.
  • Nothing depends on remembering. The date, the owner and the evidence live on the item, so context survives an interruption.
  • Read it your way. Eleven display and reading controls ship in the products and on this site — text size, spacing, line length, contrast, a hyperlegible font, reduced motion, decoration off.
  • Plain words. Ambiguity is a cost, not a style.

We would rather build the career path than talk about the statistics. Neurodivergent people are badly under-employed relative to their capability, and as Shard grows, hiring and contracting neurodivergent people is an explicit intention rather than a hope.

Starting without a big commitment

A startup, a sole trader or a one-person consultancy should not have to sign a per-seat annual contract and hand their records to someone else's cloud just to keep proper books or run an audit programme.

  • Both products can run on hardware you control, including a laptop.
  • Where AI helps, an open-weight model on your own machine is a supported option — not a paid upgrade.
  • Early access during the beta is free, and we would rather have your honest findings than your money.

Shard’s approach to accessible, accountable tooling grew out of the same work as the BRAINS initiative — a wider effort around responsible, well-documented AI and neuro-inclusive systems. Separate undertaking, shared goals.
